Integrating social science into conservation planning

چکیده
A growing body of literature has highlighted the value social science for conservation, yet diverse approaches sciences are still inconsistently incorporated in conservation initiatives. Building greater capacity integration requires frameworks and case studies that provide concrete guidance specific examples. To address this need, we have developed a framework aimed at expanding role formal planning processes. Our illustrates multiple ways which research can contribute to four stages such processes: 1) defining problem project team; 2) goals; 3) identifying impact pathways designing interventions; 4) developing evaluating indicators success (or failure). We then present timely study wolf reintroduction Colorado, U.S.A., demonstrate opportunities, challenges, complexities applying our practice.

Integrating economic costs into conservation planning.
Recent studies that incorporate the spatial distributions of biological benefits and economic costs in conservation planning have shown that limited budgets can achieve substantially larger biological gains than when planning ignores costs. Despite concern from donors about the effectiveness of conservation interventions, these increases in efficiency from incorporating costs into planning have...

متن کاملIntegrating oxidative ecology into conservation physiology
Ecologists have recently shown great interest in using physiological markers as indicators of the health of animal populations. In this context, the measurement of markers of oxidative balance, such as antioxidant defences and oxidative damage, may be a valuable tool. Indeed, at the individual level, antioxidant defences are positively associated with fertility and survival probability, while e...
متن کاملIntegrating human impacts and ecological integrity into a risk-based protocol for conservation planning.
Conservation planning aims to protect biodiversity by sustainng the natural physical, chemical, and biological processes within representative ecosystems. Often data to measure these components are inadequate or unavailable. The impact of human activities on ecosystem processes complicates integrity assessments and might alter ecosystem organization at multiple spatial scales. Freshwater conser...
